Night Springs

A fan game of Alan Wake, where a writer who can influence reality through his writing is trapped in a one-minute time loop. He must find clues, rewrite the story to change the entire scene, and continue searching for new clues.

Project Introduction

The original intention of creating this game was to express my admiration for Alan Wake and its creator, Sam Lake. During a 48-hour game jam with the theme of "one minute," I collaborated with another artist to develop this game.

I used my favorite HD-2D rendering style, which I learned from Octopath Traveler.

My Key Responsibilities

Craft Your Own Story

The player's writing has the power to alter reality. Here, you can freely combine the discovered clues as you like to rewrite the story. If your deduction is correct, new clues will appear in the scene, allowing you to use them to further advance the game.

I have manually set the outcomes corresponding to these clue combinations. Depending on the clues combined, the scene will change accordingly, potentially revealing new clues.

The image below represents the story branching and level transition map. Different combinations of clues will lead the story in different directions.

HD-2D Rendering

By adding shadow and lighting calculations to the fragments of Unity sprites, sprites used solely for textures can receive lighting and cast shadows. I learned this technique from the visual effects of Octopath Traveler.

I also used a more complex version of this effect in my other project, Deep Echoes. For more details, refer to the rendering section in Deep Echoes.
